An online marketing degree, with an official certificate,  graduation ceremony and a recognized qualification as an online marketer, doesn’t actually exist.

And even if it did, it wouldn’t be worth the paper it was written on and I’ll tell you why.

Of course there’s such a thing as a degree in marketing, but that concentrates on the science of marketing and the methods it covers are mainly offline methods.

The reason there isn’t a degree in online marketing is because online marketing changes so quickly that by the time the degree syllabus was compiled and then taught to the students, when they’d finished the course and were ready to graduate, most of what they’d learned would already be obsolete, like last week’s newspapers!

Unlike long-established professions such as medicine, dentistry or law, where the pace of change is much slower – online marketing is still in its infancy and, as a result, is constantly growing and changing just like a growing infant, almost on a daily basis.

That’s why if there were such a thing as an online marketing degree, it would be a waste of time acquiring the qualification.

But there’s another, equally important reason why acquiring an online marketing degree wouldn’t be worth your time or money and that’s because online marketing is one of those professions where you rise or fall on your abilities, not on your paper qualifications.

Online marketers are self-employed so you don’t have to submit a resumee or curriculum vitae to a potential employer and there’s no nerve-wracking job interview. It doesn’t matter whether you have any paper qualifications or not, you can get started right away.

The downside is that there’s no fixed income, which means your earnings are directly related to your skills as a marketer. The better you are as an online marketer, the more you’ll earn. You set your own limits.

That’s why even if there were such a thing as an online marketing degree, it wouldn’t be required, but what IS required is online marketing education.

Online marketing education never stops, because to be a successful online marketer you have to keep on the cutting edge of the latest trends and techniques.

So chances are they’re going to fall by the wayside very quickly and, worst case scenario, they’re going to blame YOU for their failure. Because YOU were the one who encouraged them to get involved!

Consequently, the only sensible way to market a business is to put yourself in the direct line of sight of people who are ALREADY looking. People who are actively seeking information about starting their own business.

They may not yet know exactly what kind of business they’re looking for but what they do know is that they want to earn extra income, give up the job they hate, gain financial freedom or be able to retire more quickly.

There are literally millions of people out there looking for a home business and so as a marketer your task is to enable them to find you at the very moment they are looking.

Doesn’t that make a lot more sense than clubbing half-hearted prospects over the head?

Of course, you can change the wording to your own style but the message the other person is receiving is still the same…

SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME!!

That’s one of the most basic of human needs, for other people to “get us”, to understand our needs and desires, to be on the same wavelength as us.

(How many times have you heard the old chestnut, “my wife doesn’t understand me” as an excuse for an unfaithful husband?)

It doesn’t matter whether you’re involved in web marketing or offline marketing, in any home base business you need the ability to get on with people.

And the best thing about telling someone you’d feel exactly the same way they do if you were in their shoes is that IT’S TRUE!

It’s ALWAYS true, whatever the circumstance. Even when you know the other person is completely wrong.

Because if you were in the other person’s shoes you would BE that person.

Whatever had happened to them to make them the way they are today would have happened to you, too.

Really, if we’re honest, we deserve only minimal credit for being who we are. We’re all shaped by our genes, our environment and our life experiences.

I always think it’s useful to remember that when I encounter someone who is unreasonable and hateful.

“There but for the grace of God, go I”.

So, use that magic phrase in your dealing with prospects, friends and family and you’ll be amazed at its power.

“Let the other person feel that the idea is theirs “

We all have much more faith in an idea we come up with ourselves than one handed to us “ready made”.

It’s just human nature to trust our own judgement more than anyone else’s.

That’s why it’s always a bad idea to ram our own opinions down someone else’s throat.

The smart way is to make a suggestion, plant a seed in the other person’s mind and leave them to come to our conclusion on their own.

A great way to make sure you have a good relationship with a new team member in your work from home business is to tell them exactly what they can expect from you.

Spell out how much time you’ll spend with them, how often, and what kind of support you’ll be giving them.

Then ask them what YOU can expect from THEM in return.

Isn’t that a much more skilful way of helping a new person set their own expectations of themselves than you telling them what they need to be doing?

It’s almost as though you’ve struck a moral bargain with your new team mate.

What you’ll probably find is that in their eagerness to be worthy of whatever help and support you’ve promised them, they’ll set their expectations of themselves much higher than YOU would have done!

And because they set their own agenda for their marketing strategies instead of you telling them what to do, they are much more likely to follow through.

On a recent day out to Saltburn-by-the-sea in North Yorkshire my friend and business partner, Catherine, reminisced about the last time we were there which was very different.

Back then I was in a network marketing company with no online marketing course and the only way I knew how to market my business was word of mouth (which I couldn’t bring myself to do) or delivering flyers.

I remember we spent the whole day pushing flyers through letter boxes, nearly 2,000 in all and it didn’t result in a single sale.

The video below was supposed to be part of our series based on How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie, and the topic under discussion was “Be Friendly”.

What it turned into though was a hilarious object lesson about how NOT to make a marketing video.

If you’d like to make a video equally as unprofessional as this one, here’s what you need to do:

1. Set up your camera right beside a road so there’s plenty of traffic noise.

2. Choose the windiest spot you can find.

3. Don’t secure the tripod. If it blows over right in the middle of filming, so much the better. This will add no end to the unprofessional image you’re trying to create.

4. Don’t check the battery status. If the batteries should fail before you’ve finished your film and you’re cut off in mid-sentence, this will also help  make you look foolish and as though you don’t know what you’re doing.

Or to sum up: We’ve made the mistakes so you don’t have to!

Did you know that every single person in the world has a favourite word in their own language?

And believe it or not, it’s always exactly the same word!

Can you guess what it is? Are you thinking maybe love, or money, even?

No, the word each of us likes to hear more than any other, is………….

Our own name!

As Dale Carnegie puts it in How To Win Friends And Influence People,

“A person’s name is the sweetest and most important sound to them, in any language”.

This is something I hadn’t given any thought to until reading this great book as part of my online marketing course.

But then I thought about how irritating I find it when someone contacts me and spells my name wrong, ending it with an “e”.  I always have to fight a childish urge to retaliate by deliberately spelling their own name wrong in my reply!

A person’s name is their identity so get it wrong or forget it at your peril. Doing either is tantamount to saying “you aren’t important enough to me for me to remember or care who you are”.

The best way to remember someone’s name when you’re introduced is to repeat it back to them. The act of saying it outloud helps to imprint it in your mind.

If you’re dealing with people in an advertising business internet marketing, it’s always a good idea to put their name in the subject line of an email. Statistics show that if you do that, your email is much more likely to get opened and read.

However, it IS possible to go overboard and alienate people by overusing their name, which is something my friend and business partner, Catherine, discuss in the video below.
